Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June 1 to November 30. Property managers spend a lot of time preparing buildings for wind and water, but security needs planning too. Damaged gates, dead alarms and empty buildings make properties easy targets before and after a storm.
Before the storm
- Confirm your security provider’s storm plan: who stays, who comes back, and how they will reach the site
- Photograph gates, fencing, cameras and access points so damage is easy to document later
- Secure or move equipment, golf carts, and anything that can be stolen or become a projectile
- Update the emergency contact list for the board, management and vendors
During the storm
Officers should never be put in danger. Most posts stand down when conditions become unsafe and resume as soon as authorities allow. Agree on these rules in writing before the season starts.
After the storm
- Restore access control fast: broken gates and doors invite looting and trespassing
- Add patrols while power, cameras or alarms are down
- Log contractors and adjusters entering the property
- Consider a fire watch if alarm or sprinkler systems were damaged
